Visit wineries, particularly small local ones. They are always anxious to teach you about their wines in particular and wines in general.
Go to a neighborhood wine store or liquor store that has a wide selection of wines. Tell the proprietor that you are just starting out in wine and let them guide you. If they just try to sell you a couple of bottles quickly you have the wrong salesperson or wrong store.
Some larger supermarkets have wine tastings. Some are good to learn, others are just trying to sell wines.
Wine bars and restaurants have wine tastings, a great place to learn about wine.
Most important. Don’t be intimidated. And when anyone makes you feel ignorant or unsophisticated, move on to somewhere else. People who like wine enjoy sharing and bringing others into the pleasures of wine.
